Short Description
Jose first discovered salsa in 2005 when he would accompany his mother to her weekly salsa classes in Veracruz, Mexico. At first, he was reluctant to participate, rather preferring to sit and watch, but soon he decided to try out a few of the moves and once Jose started, there was no stopping him.
In 2006, Jose’s passion for salsa grew so much that the time for sacrifice came. Jose gave up his life and everything he knew in Mexico to move to New York City. Rather than do it alone, he convinced his brother, Jorge, to join him on this great adventure to the Big Apple. There, the Aguilar brothers immediately began taking as many classes as possible with all the greats: Eddie Torres, Yamulée, Frankie Martinez, Sekou McMiller… to name just a few. In addition to attending classes and practising at home, they attended as many of the renowned social events as possible in the Mecca of Mambo.
Soon Jose realized that to truly master salsa, learning other dance forms would not only be beneficial but necessary, at least if he wanted to reach the professional level he desired. Jose studied Latin Jazz, Flamenco and Latin Ballroom at reputable schools such as Alvin Ailey and Broadway Dance Center.
After 4 years in New York, it was time for a new challenge and Europe was calling. Since 2010, Jose has been on multiple tours of Europe, performing and teaching with one of his talented partners at numerous congresses, festivals, galas and local parties. His shows are not only a demonstration of brilliant technique and mind-blowing speed but also include intricate details that highlight his musicality and skills as a choreographer. However, it’s not just a life of spotlights, glitter and jet-setting for Jose. He has also taken a more “behind the scenes” role when coaching certain professional couples and several of the student teams, some of which he created (The Latin Blood Project in Mexico, Raices Negras in Greece).
Jose recently performed his first solo show which revealed a whole new side of himself, demonstrating his evolution as a dancer and maturity as a performer. Throughout the parties, you can be sure to find Jose on the dance floor all night long (something for which he quickly became famous for in NYC), keeping the ladies entertained not only with his crazy turn-patterns, but also his great musical ability.
