Day 20: Travel Turns

Day 20: Travel Turns

Travel turns are a great way to bring everything we have practiced so far together. The turns we will be practicing are also known as chaine turns. They are trained in ballet, jazz, ballroom and even in salsa (whether you realized it or not). You don’t need to know the fancy names to do the turn or even to master it. But knowledge is power, so if you want to learn more about these turns do a search on YouTube for a myriad of incredible tutorials and videos.

We are going to do these turns using salsa technique so that it is accessible and useful to you. That basically just means keeping a slight bend in your knees the whole time. Give it a try going in both directions, although you will most likely mainly use it to the left in a real salsa world scenario. Imagine the technique to be similar to the inside turns, only you are only doing one turn at a time and you are traveling forward slightly with each step you take.

Remember:

  • Keep your feet turned out to direct yourself in your turn, help your balance, propel the turns and look nice.
  • Don’t give yourself too much power. You REALLY don’t need it here. Each step will take you as far as you need to go.
  • SPOT. You are traveling. If you don’t spot you will get lost! Look at where you are going
  • Don’t try and travel too much at first. Just feel it out. Then if you like, see how far you can travel while maintaining control. It is a fun exercise.

Let’s kill this one guys! Don’t lose momentum now that we have made it this far. This is the time in the challenge when you start seeing the results of your hard training, so don’t give up now!!! This is when it starts to get fun!!
